Whimsical oil on masonite of a pink elephant by African American artist Jack Cooley (1923-2008).  Signed lower right and presented in original vintage frame, this piece dates to ca. 1960.  The work measures 10 inches by 24 inches. Overall measurements (including frame) are 14 inches by 28 inches.

About the Artist

 


Jack Cooley was born and raised in Shawnee, Oklahoma. After serving his country honorably in the United States Merchant Marines during WWII, Jack attended Colorado College and the Chicago Art Institute, moving to New Orleans in 1950 to begin his career as an artist. Jack created paintings and portraits that depicted the many varied aspects of his adopted city's unique culture, with a particular focus on jazz musicians and New Orleans architecture. His art is widely collected, a wonderful legacy for future generations of art lovers.
